What Restaurant Nachos Have To Do With Life

I have yet to meet a dish of restaurant nachos I liked..and I’ve tried quite a few. They suck, they truly do.

All the good stuff, the veggies, the meat, and the cheese seem to have been unceremoniously dumped in the middle of a carefully arranged and colourful plate of crispy nacho chips. I mean what’s the point?! Sure it looks pretty, but uh, correct me if I’m wrong, but I came to EAT the food not admire it and put it up for display.  Read more…

Desi and Proud: What I Mean When I Say ‘Desi’

Desi’s are people with Pakistani, Indian, Bengali, and Sri Lankan heritage. But that’s not all of what Desi means. There’s a desi culture, lifestyle, a way of looking at life. Within this culture, like any culture, there are different perspectives too. So here’s what I mean when I say ‘Desi’.. Read more…

Life Change

Changing your life is bloody hard. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. Breaking bad habits and instilling new ones isn’t just a matter of snapping your fingers.

Some seem easier than others. We seem to adjust to some things faster and others take forever. In fact, we try and try and try..and fail every time. Why?

Desire, attitude, and reminders.

In that order. Read more…

Why NOT to Consume A Lot of Information

I am a bookworm. Then with the emergence of online media – especially blogs – I became an even more ferocious information consumer. I could spend the entire day jumping from link to link from within posts and keeping up with the blogs I am subscribed to and still not get through even a fraction of the information that is immediately available to me in my sphere.

However, I consume all this information, but how much do I digest? I go through information so fast, jumping from one piece to another that I hardly give myself time to actually gain something from it.

I read a lot and sure I learn a lot, but I’m willing to bet I don’t learn as much I can. So many of us try to consume a lot of information. There are different reasons for doing so: fear of not keeping up to date, being left out of a conversation, sounding smart, a simple desire to learn and read about more things, etc. Yet, I feel that consuming so much information at such a fast pace is not helping us be more learned or knowledgeable, or at least, this is not a very efficient way to do so in the long run. Desi Muslims, Westerners: Dating, Love, and Heart Break

Warning : this post is candid. It may piss you off.

-1-

Love and relationships are a very touchy topic that hit a lot of nerves with a lot of people. Regardless of culture or ethnicity, any topic involving the interaction of men and women can be uncomfortable for many.

In desi culture, the idea of dating is practically evil. Desi parents scoff at and scorn the youth that have a multitude of relationships and declare love for one person and then another a little while later. They have no respect for the people who have been in and out of a few relationships before marriage. They equally make fun of married couples who after some time in a marriage fall out of love and decide to get a divorce. White people are idiots who have spoiled the institution of marriage. Their ideas about love and how to find love are atrocious and unsuccessful.

In Western culture, a woman who wears a hijab must be oppressed and forced to do so by the men in the family. If a Muslim woman does something against her family’s wishes, westerners worry that she may become a victim of honour killings or something bad. They find the abaya scary. So many think Islam is evil. All Muslims must be terrorists. All Muslim women are terrorized by husbands and forced into marriages. All Muslim men either want to be terrorists or are secretly being cruel to their children and women.

Do you see a pattern here? Do you see a problem here?

I do. I see some big glaring FAT problems.  Read more…
